Driver Training

Become the Ultimate Driving Machine

Our BMW Driver Training is modelled on BMW's official driver training programmes in Europe. It aims to give owners an active and dynamic drive experience that provides driving pleasure, education and entertainment in a controlled and safe environment.

BMW Driver Training teaches participants to appreciate and understand the limits of technology and driving skill.

At the same time it allows them to assess and overcome potential hazards, in particular by avoiding such risks from the start. It is only with this basic knowledge of safety related principles and the laws of driving dynamics that drivers can really understand and appreciate the actual situations they experience on the road and in training.

History

In 1977 BMW in Germany became the first vehicle manufacturer in the world to offer professional driver training.

BMW has consistently improved and developed driver training programmes in the years since that time.

Today, BMW Driver Training is a truly international initiative for greater safety on the roads with courses conducted across the world including Europe, USA, Canada, Asia and South Africa.

The New Zealand programme has been developed drawing on the accumulated experience of those 30 years of driver training.

Instructors

Experienced driver training professionals provide instruction at the courses.

BMW Driver Training instructors are trained to the international BMW standard and have extensive motor sport or driver training experience.

All participants receive expert tuition via a radio communication system linked to our instructors.

Level 1 Course

BMW Driver Training in Europe provides a comprehensive multi-level training programme with participants starting with the first level course and then working their way up level-by-level to an ever-increasing standard.

During 2006 BMW New Zealand will provide an introduction to BMW Driver Training with the Level 1 course, as well as an advanced level course.

However, Level 2 Driver Training will only be offered to drivers who have completed the first course. Level 2 Driver Training will commence July 3rd, 2006.

Programme on the day

Each course is accompanied by thorough theoretical instruction followed by direct application of the knowledge acquired in simulated practical situations.

Participants arrive at the circuit at 09.30 for hospitality and introductions.

The full day begins with a briefing at 10.00 am and includes on track activities that enable participants to appreciate the technology and performance of the cars and the correct driving technique.

The programme does not involve racing between the participants.

However, at the end of the day an experienced racing driver in a BMW M5 takes each participant for laps of the Pukekohe Park Grand Prix circuit.

BMW Driver Training Fleet

BMW has committed to a dedicated fleet of ten 3 Series cars, choosing the top of the range 330i model of the new 3 Series, which was launched in late May.

These new titanium silver cars are highly-specified with sports seats, sports suspension, active steering, advanced 190 kW 3.0-litre six cylinder engines and six speed Steptronic automatic transmission, which features manual shift capability.

The ability to drive one of our BMW cars relieves participants of worries about using their own vehicles - and the insurance concerns, wear and tear and risks associated with such uses.

Pukekohe Park

The venue for BMW Driver Training in 2005 is the recently-upgraded race track at Pukekohe Park south of Auckland. The circuit was built in the 1960's as a venue for the New Zealand Grand Prix.

Today the 2.4-km track is the venue for the annual V8 Supercar International meetings and is regularly used for a variety of motorsport activity including National meetings and club racing for both cars and motorcycles.

The circuit which is one of the fastest in the southern hemisphere, complies with FIA safety regulations. The BMW Driver Training Centre is located alongside the start-finish and grid area of the Pukekohe Park circuit.
